The overhaul process step by step
An efficient overhaul process usually follows a fixed sequence of steps. Although execution can vary by asset type (for example, an electric motor versus a pump), the core steps are often the same:
- Incoming inspection: The first check when the item arrives. Here you record any potential transport damage, if the asset identification is clear, verify if the item has been cleaned correctly, etc.
- Pre-test: A functional test before disassembly to capture the initial condition. Often carried out at the customer’s request to show whether the item was still operating correctly. This can be important for determining overhaul intervals.
- Disassembly & cleaning: Disassembling all components, followed by cleaning or blasting, so they can be assessed for wear or damage.
- Inspection & photo documentation: Recording the condition of each component, indicating whether replacement is needed, and documenting damage with photos where relevant.
- Replacing or overhauling parts: Replace defective components; soft parts such as seals or bearings are renewed. Components that can be reused are reworked where necessary to bring them back within specification.
- Reassembly & conservation: Reassembling all components to the manufacturer’s specifications or the workshop’s best practices. Where necessary, applying new conservation to protect the item against corrosion.
- Final test & outgoing inspection: Before leaving the workshop, a final test confirms correct operation. The test results are documented in the overhaul report, and the report is finalised. The outgoing inspection is the last step, recording how the item will be prepared and shipped back to the customer.
Tip: Use the interim report option to schedule a review with the customer, often after the inspection. The findings recorded up to that point can be shared with the customer through this report. Based on this, the customer can decide whether to approve the continuation of the overhaul, or to stop the process and replace the asset. These interim reports are also stored in Centix and automatically become part of an asset’s overhaul history.
